Hillcrest is situated on a hill above Durban and used to be a small village near the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
Surrounded by green pastures and farmland, it offered a peaceful retreat away from the city’s hustle and bustle. However, the property boom changed everything, and Hillcrest transformed into a booming suburb of Durban, attracting people seeking a safer, less crowded lifestyle.
Despite the changes, Hillcrest has managed to retain its country village ambiance, with little heavy industry present in the area. Main Road, which used to be a residential area, has been rezoned for office and commercial use, and vacant land has been used to build retirement villages, gated security communities, equestrian estates, and golf estates.
Hillcrest offers a variety of activities, from the Shongweni Farmers market, farm stalls, and nurseries to country pubs and artists’ havens. The proximity of Durban, only a 20-minute drive away, also adds to the appeal of living in Hillcrest for professionals and families alike!
