Affluent Suburb
Bedfordview is an affluent suburb in western Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa. It is a town that has a rich history starting as early as the Anglo Boer War! During the war, British cavalry was based in Bedfordview and apparently planted the oak trees along Van Buuren Ave. There is also a legend that an Indian Rajah-based with the unit died and was buried somewhere in Bedfordview in full regalia, including his jewel-encrusted sword. The town was laid out on a farm named Elandsfontein. The Witwatersrand Gold Reef had a very important influence on what the town has grown into.
Gillooly’s farm, set in the heart of Bedfordview, is virtually a farm in the middle of the city and the tranquil atmosphere is very popular amongst locals for picnics along the lake under the trees. There are some wonderful views over the Kensington valley and the northern suburbs from here. Bedfordview is a quiet and leafy place to stay for anyone. The upmarket neighbourhood is almost park-like due to the lush gardens with prolific bird life and tree-lined streets.
The garden suburb of Bedfordview is also one of the closest suburbs of Johannesburg to the OR Tambo Airport. This makes it an ideal location for business people dipping into the city only briefly.
